Radial Shockwave therapy is a mechanical, acoustic wave treatment, which is effective in treating chronic, prolonged tendon conditions around the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, heel and sole of the foot. It is used in conjunction with a strengthening program specifically prescribed for your condition. It is a rapid treatment, which is loud, can be uncomfortable and lasts between three to six minutes. It is administered once a week. There are very few side effects with shockwave; you might see some localised redness or a small bruise. After treatment, we would expect to see a reduction in your pain.
There are some contra-indications/precautions that must be considered;
Haemophilia or any other clotting disorder.
Anti-coagulation therapy such as Warfarin, Heparin or any other prescribed anti-coagulant medication.
Cardiac Pacemaker.
Pregnancy, please discuss this with your physiotherapist.
Recent corticosteroid injection, within the previous 6 weeks.
Local infection in the treatment area.
Electronic implant within the treatment area.
It is important to disclose to your physiotherapist if any of these apply to you.
